Kari Ragan is an internationally recognized voice pedagogue, author, Singing Voice Rehabilitation Specialist Voice Teacher (SVRS-VT), and soprano whose career spans more than four decades. Widely respected for her ability to bridge voice science and artistic practice, she is known for translating research into practical, effective strategies for singers and the professionals who work with them.
Dr. Ragan is the author of the acclaimed textbook A Systematic Approach to Voice: The Art of Studio Application (Plural Publishing), with a substantially expanded second edition released in 2026. Her scholarship has focused on Evidence-Based Voice Pedagogy (EBVP), vocal health, singing voice rehabilitation, and the practical application of voice science in the teaching studio. Her published work has appeared in the Journal of Singing and the Journal of Voice among other journals. She is recognized internationally for her contributions to the development of Evidence-Based Voice Pedagogy (EBVP) and for helping establish a framework that integrates current research, practitioner expertise, and the needs and goals of individual singers.
In recognition of her contributions to the profession, Dr. Ragan was named a Master Teacher for the NATS Intern Program in 2021 and was inducted into the American Academy of Teachers of Singing in 2025. Additional honors include the Van L. Lawrence Fellowship, the NATS Foundation Pedagogy Award, the New York Singing Teachers Association Distinguished Voice Professional Certificate, and the Wicklund Singing Voice Specialist Certificate.
Dr. Ragan earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Washington and holds both Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in Vocal Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. From 2010 to 2021, she served on the voice faculty at the University of Washington, teaching applied voice, vocal pedagogy, Italian diction, and French art song literature. She also served on the advisory board for the development of the university’s Musical Theatre degree program.
As an SVRS-VT, Dr. Ragan works in affiliation with the University of Washington’s laryngology program and collaborates with multidisciplinary voice teams in Seattle and throughout the United States. Her clinical work focuses on the habilitation and rehabilitation of singers recovering from vocal injury or pathology, helping them return to healthy and expressive performance.
For more than forty years, Dr. Ragan has maintained a thriving independent voice studio. While her primary training and early career were rooted in classical singing, extensive additional study and professional development have enabled her to work successfully with singers across a wide range of genres, including classical, musical theatre, pop, rock, jazz, R&B, contemporary commercial music, and Indian classical, Carnatic, and other global singing traditions.
Her students have performed with major opera companies throughout the United States, appeared in national Broadway tours and professional musical theatre productions, and established successful careers as recording and performing artists. Many have earned recognition at competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the NATS Artist Awards.
An active presenter and educator, Dr. Ragan is regularly invited to offer workshops, masterclasses, keynote addresses, and lectures for universities and professional organizations throughout the world. She has presented for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), the Pan American Vocology Association (PAVA), The Voice Foundation, the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT), and numerous academic and professional organizations. She served as Program Chair for the 2025 International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) in Toronto and was invited to present a plenary session. She was also invited to deliver a keynote address at the 2026 Pan European Voice Conference (PEVOC) in Istanbul, Türkiye.
Dr. Ragan is co-founder, program chair, and organizer of Northwest Voice: The Art and Science of the Performing Voice, an multidisciplinary conference that has brought together voice professionals, performers, clinicians, and researchers annually in Seattle since 2006. She is a charter member of PAVA, a founding member of the Northwest Chapter of The Voice Foundation, served as Chair of the NATS Advancement Committee from 2017 to 2024, and has also served on the NATS Foundation Board.
Since 2011, Dr. Ragan has served as moderator and host of NATS Chat, one of the field’s most widely recognized online educational forums. Through monthly conversations with leading researchers, clinicians, and pedagogues, NATS Chat has become a valued resource for voice professionals around the world, with archived sessions freely available through the NATS website and YouTube channel.
Dr. Ragan was invited to serve on the voice faculty of the St Andrews Vocal Pedagogy Course in Scotland in 2024 and Oklahoma City University’s Summer Vocal Pedagogy Institute in 2025. She continues to present internationally on voice pedagogy, vocal health, rehabilitation, and evidence-based practice.
Through her teaching, writing, clinical collaborations, and professional service, Dr. Ragan continues to advance the field of voice pedagogy with a deep respect for both the art and science of singing.
