The Online Supervised Teacher Training Practicum focuses on the application of a systematic approach to voice in the teaching studio. Designed for professionals who work with singers, the practicum provides individualized feedback and a structured framework for assessing vocal function, identifying challenges and successes, and developing targeted strategies to facilitate efficient singing.
Because enrollment is intentionally limited, the experience is highly interactive and tailored to the needs of the participating professionals. Sessions include observation, guided discussion, collaborative problem-solving, and real-time feedback on teaching decisions, lesson design, and vocal training strategies.
The Practicum Includes:
- Fully online instruction
- Live sessions led by author, singer, and voice pedagogue Dr. Kari Ragan
- Session recordings available for review if a class must be missed (live attendance with camera on is strongly encouraged)
- A Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of the practicum
- Individualized feedback within a supportive and collaborative learning environment
Modeled after supervised training experiences common in many professional disciplines, the practicum provides participants with an opportunity to refine their skills and instructional decision-making through guided application, observation, and feedback.
Enrollment is intentionally limited to 8 active participants to maximize individualized attention, discussion, and mentorship. Additional observational spaces are available for those who wish to attend and learn through observation without presenting students.
Why Take This Practicum?
Have you ever wished your professional training had included a supervised teaching practicum? Perhaps you’ve spent considerable time studying voice science and pedagogy and are now seeking real-time feedback on how to apply those principles in the studio. Maybe a singer you work with is experiencing a particular vocal challenge, and you would value guidance in designing effective vocal tasks and training strategies.
This practicum addresses those needs and much more. Based on Dr. Kari Ragan’s book, A Systematic Approach to Voice: The Art of Studio Application (2nd edition, 2026), it brings the concepts from the page into a dynamic, real-time learning experience.
A strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, acoustics, cognition, and the mechanisms of voice production should form the foundation of effective work with singers. Learning how to translate that knowledge into effective teaching decisions is the next critical step.
Active participants will have the opportunity to share a portion of a recorded voice lesson or invite a singer/student to participate live during a session. All vocal genres and styles are welcome. Through feedback and guided discussion, participants will learn a systematic approach to observing aural and visual cues, assessing vocal function, and designing vocal tasks that facilitate efficient singing.
Enrollment is limited to 8 active participants to ensure ample time for individualized feedback, discussion, and mentorship. Additional observational spaces are available for those who wish to attend and learn through observation.
How the Practicum Works
- Active participants will present either a recorded lesson segment or work with a singer/student live during their designated presentation sessions. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions live with cameras on.
- Each active participant will be assigned two presentation sessions during the practicum. The same singer/student may be featured both times, or participants may choose to present two different singers/students.
- During each presentation session, participants will share a portion of a recorded lesson or conduct a live lesson segment. Recorded presentations may consist of a continuous lesson excerpt or selected segments from different points in the lesson.
- To allow ample time for discussion, analysis, and feedback, participants will typically share approximately 8-12 minutes of lesson footage within their presentation session.
- Following each presentation, Dr. Ragan will provide feedback focused on assessment, instructional decision-making, and the development of effective vocal training strategies.
- Active participants will also receive written feedback following their presentation sessions.
Practicum Course Reviews
“I use what I learned in Dr. Ragan’s practicum every day when working with singers. I, truly, can’t recommend the experience enough!” Amber Mogg Cathey
“This whole experience has been one of the best things I’ve done to help advance my teaching.” Kim Kimberly Valde
“This course is essential for teachers looking for practical technique that actually helps your students. You’ll leave armed with tools to help troubleshoot vocal issues and a systematic approach for solving them. I recommend it to all my voice teacher friends.” Malia Morris
“The Singing Voice Specialist practicum provided me with invaluable insights into evaluating and treating singers with vocal injuries. Dr. Ragan’s comprehensive model, featuring individual case presentations, personalized verbal and written feedback, colleague observations, and group discussions, is an exemplary platform for fostering both knowledge acquisition and skill development. Each session left me with fresh ideas, expanded vocabulary, and practical techniques that I was able to implement immediately both within an interdisciplinary medical model and personal teaching model. I highly recommend this practicum to anyone dedicated to preserving, rehabilitating, and enhancing vocal health and performance.” Abbey Carlson, M.S., CCC-SLP
“Dr. Ragan is an incredible pedagogue and teacher, but she has also pioneered the field of singing voice rehabilitation. Despite being one of the first to dig deeper into this type of work, she is always current in research and best practice, and is incredibly and wonderfully humble and kind in how she approaches instructing the next era of SVSs. In Dr. Ragan’s course, you will not only receive the benefit of her masterfully detailed yet approachable and most importantly, functional textbook, but you will also partake in hands-on teaching and learning, which again puts the focus on functional application of skills. This forum style is radically helpful in the way that it places transference of skills above intellectualizing concepts, after the initial understanding of anatomy/physiology has been had. This course is a must-have in the toolbox of any SVS.” Brittani Farrell, MS, MM, CCC-SLP
“Dr. Ragan’s decades of experience and extensive knowledge of physiology and research was exactly what I was looking for to enrich my knowledge of vocal rehabilitation in singers. As an early career SLP, it was invaluable for me to be observed and have feedback on my work in a supportive and kind environment. It’s so rare to find opportunities like this when you leave university, but so vital to break out of the unhelpful patterns that develop over time. The singing instructor’s perspective is the missing piece to the voice SLP’s education, and Dr. Ragan’s practicum is unmatched in what is offered in the field today. Not one to miss!” Olivia Boddicker, B.M., M.A, CCC-SLP
